The improvement of trace criterion for designing space-time trellis codes

The improvement of the trace criterion for designing space-time trellis codes(STTCs) is studied in this paper. In the trace criterion only the minimum trace is considered. This is a flaw for this criterion, because it makes the trace criterion can not select the best codes efficiently. To overcome this flaw, firstly the trace distribution is put forward, which dominates the code error performance. However the trace distribution still can not determine the code error performance completely. Then after a new error probability upper bound is derived, the eigenvalue sum-square/square-sum ratio distribution is presented and considered to be the supplement of the trace distribution. Finally based on the two distributions mentioned above, an improved criterion for designing STTCs is developed.According to this criterion some new codes are found, and the simulation results show that the new codes are the best codes as we know.
