The Use and Translation of Passives in News English Text

Based on Svartvick's study on passive voice and random sample as well as statistical treatment, it can be concluded that among various English texts, passive voice appears most frequently in news English texts except technical English texts. In terms of its function, passive voice is likely to ease the mood, accentuate the acceptor of action, and achieve cohesion and coherence in News English texts; The translation of passives in news English texts should abide by the general principle of news English translation. It is also necessary to pay close attention to the context and adopt different translation techniques flexibly.
