Study of Rate Control for JPEG2000 Image Cording

WU Zong-fu · Jisuanji fangzhen · 2006

JPEG2000 is a new image cording. The standard makes use of advanced compression technology to provide superior compression performance, progressive transmission and flexibility that outperform the original JPEG standard. And it can provide superior rate control performance.By rate control, the code stream can be truncated at any position and it is possible to decode an image from the remaining bits so that progressive transmission by SNR and resolution is expediently implemented. The rate control algorithm has direct influence on quality, coding efficiency and memory requirement. In this paper, two rate control algorithms are presented. One algorithm is called post-compression rate-distortion (PCRD) optimization scheme in JPEG2000.Other algorithm is called priority scanning rate allocation(PSRA).The computational complexity, working memory size and image compression quality of two methods are compared. At the end,the effectiveness of two rate control methods is shown with experimental results.
