Comparison of RED and Droptail Algorithms Based on Router

Xiaoping Yang · Journal of Changchun Post and Telecommunication Institute · 2005

Droptail and RED(Random Early Detection ) are two kinds of important queue management algorithms used in routers. In order to provide basis for replacing Droptail algorithm with RED which is widely used in routers, the performances and requirements of the two algorithms are compared in detail. Under the conditions of same buffer sizes, it is verified that RED algorithm is much improved in comparison with Droptail algorithm on congestion control, performance, and resource utilization in network with using Network Simulation Version 2. The simulation results show that with the RED algorithm the average queue size is actually kept to be shorter by 32%, the time-delay is reduced by 50% or more, network throughputs are increased by 13%, the drop rate is reduced by 13%, and global synchronization are avoided in some extent.
