An Energy-Efficient Data Aggregation Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

A large number of sensors are usually deployed around some discrete targets in wireless sensor networks. For such target coverage networks, this paper proposes a distributed energy-efficient data aggregation protocol (EETO). EETO groups sensors which have commonly covered targets organized into one cluster, where all the cluster members are the K-hop coverage neighbors of the cluster head. Therefore, the relative data can be aggregated in time and completely at the cluster head, so that the data transmissions are reduced greatly. Detailed simulation results show that EETO reduces energy consumption and prolongs the coverage lifetime of the network.
