PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF TCP/IP PROTOCOL STACK ON REGIONAL AREA NETWORKS

Jianping Pan · Chinese Journal of Computers · 1999

The TCP/IP protocol stack has gained remarkable achievement during the dramatic expansion of the global Internet. However, with the emergence of the high speed transmission facilities and the novel style application requirements, TCP/IP also shows some built in drawbacks in its functionality and performance. This paper extensively investigates the dynamic behavior of TCP/IP in the UNIX kernel with Socket interface over a regional network, especially the impact on performance from the size of the application message, TCP window and packet, as well as other optimization algorithms designed for TCP. After that, it discusses and analyzes the factors for the performance difference in TCP/IP stack from the viewpoint of protocol mechanisms.
