A Corpus-based Study on Synonyms Distinguishing

The corpus-based study of collocation and semantic prosody offers a new perspective for synonyms discrimination.Within the framework of collocation theory and semantic prosody theory,this paper intends to analyze the collocative pattern and semantic prosody of gain and obtain respectively based on the corpus of LOB.We also discuss how does the study of collocation and semantic prosody function in respect of synonyms discrimination.There are two observations made by the present survey:(1) Collocation is the reflection of cognition and semantic prosody is the manifestation of cognitive regularity;(2) Collocation,which affects and alters the lexical meaning,is an important mechanism for extending lexical meanings.The study of semantic prosody gives impetus to pragmatic differentiating of synonyms with respects to affection and style,etc.
