A security detection method has been developed for IEEE 802.15.4 through analyses of IEEE 802.15.4 protocol threats and the standards and security of the MAC layer mechanism.Fuzzing tests are used to detect potential IEEE 802.15.4 security vulnerabilities using random fuzzing test based on data mutation. The data mutation algorithm is based on node replication and protocol structural consistencies.Tests show that this algorithm greatly increases the test efficiency using fewer but more reliable test cases. The risks of the Zigbee network on the MAC layer are evaluated using this fuzzing test tool to reveal vulnerability in the MAC layer of IEEE 802.15.4.The coordinator node will stop working and the star or tree net may crash if the vulnerability is used by attackers. Thus, the data mutation algorithm based on node replication and protocol structural consistencies is an effective tool for detecting IEEE 802.15.4 security vulnerabilities.
