Some thoughts on the classification of references in functional grammar

Three opinions on the classification of references in functional grammar are presented in the paper: 1) The referring expressions and non-referring expressions should be differentiated and the referring expressions should be the object of the classification of references; 2) The concept of foregrounding expression and backgrounding expression should be established; and 3) The non-identifiable expressions should not be classified further.
