Chinese printed text reading performance with pixelized prosthetic vision systems

Guangshu Hu · Journal of Tsinghua University(Science and Technology) · 2006

The ergonomic aspects of reading Chinese printed texts with a pixelized prosthetic vision system were investigated experimentally. The phosphene perception induced by a 10×10 retinal electrode array with 250 μm separation between adjacent electrodes was simulated in a virtual-reality simulation environment. Reading rates of normally sighted subjects were assessed and compared with the effects of window width, the number of gray levels, and phosphene refresh rate in the vision system. The results show that the reading rates are reduced by both too large or too small window widths and that the reading rates increases uniformly with the frame rate. The gray level does not significantly affect the reading performance.
