Objective: To find a useful index for monitoring depth of anesthesia in real-time by studying on Lempel-Ziv complexity C(n) of electroencephalogram (EEG). Method: The EEG C(n)s of SD rats from different channels under different depth of anesthesia were measured and the relationship between C(n) and the depth of anesthesia was analyzed. Result:The C(n) decreased while the depth of anesthesia increased and vice versa in all channels. Conclusion: Using only one channel EEG C(n) is sufficient for monitoring the depth of anesthesia and its computation is simple, so it may be used as a practical index to monitor the depth of anesthesia in real-time for clinic.Author′s address Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Xi′an Jiaotong University, Xi′an,710048
