The Analysis of Implicit Conditional Sentences in English

Dong Yin-xiu · Journal of Lanzhou Polytechnic College · 2003

In English, all those that don't contain the word if but imply the conception of condition are called implicit conditional sentences, which can be expressed by the aid of preposition phrases, conjunctions, adjectives, nouns, adverbs, participial phrases, infinitives, comparative degree, context, imperative sentences, attributive clauses, independent structure, inverted structure, etc. The prerequisite for correct understanding implicit conditional sentences and translating them into Chinese is to identify them exactly. Most of implicit conditional sentences can be transformed into conditional sentences containing the word if. Compared to conditional sentences containing the word if, implicit conditional sentences have the pragmatic functions of conciseness and mildness.
