Design and Simulation on Improving TCP Performance over Heterogeneous Networks

Compared with wired networks, wireless networks have many different characteristics. This results in an unnecessary reduction in TCP performance in hybrid wired/wireless networks. We propose a sender-oriented approach to congestion control that improves upon the performance of TCP Newreno over heterogeneous networks. When the indications of packet loss arrive, the sender will distinguish congestion losses from wireless losses based on the increasing trend of the relative one-way delay. Hence a more appropriate recovery scheme will modify the corresponding part of TCP NewReno. The simulation results show that in heterogeneous networks this new version performs better than other TCP variants.
