A patch rectification-based feature matching method for spherical panoramic images

Aiming at the problem that the equi-rectangular projection for spherical panoramic images is liable to big nonlinear distortion, while it is difficult to meet the practical needs for directly applying the traditional image feature matching method in panoramic images, this paper proposed a patch rectification-based feature matching method for spherical panoramic images:first, the panoramic image with equi-rectangular projection was divided into Nsub-image blocks by longitude and latitude, and SIFT features were extracted and described after projection transformation for each sub-block;second,coordinates of SIFT features of Nsub-image blocks were transformed and then merged to obtain the whole panoramic image feature set;then matching between multiple panoramic images was completed.Experimental result showed that images after rectifying would guarantee the geometric properties of spatial objects in a large extent, and improve the quality of the feature matching.
