Map Text Label Placement with Genetic Algorithms
Liu Shuan · Control Engineering of China · 2007
To the problem that the general label placement corresponding to graphical features is difficult in GIS,and most existing tools yield a certain amount of overlapped labels and need manually adjusting overlapped labels on a map, a genetic algorithm is proposed to solve the conflicting label problem for line labeling case. The label information and street information are encoded into a chromosome, and a mutate method is invented to make a random walk along streets to avoid overlapping. Two objectives are taken into consideration, one is to avoid overlapping among labels, and the other is to enhance the aesthetical quality of label placement. The aesthetical quality is characterized by fuzzy measures.Primary tests demonstrate that the proposed genetic algorithm is very effectivein in fast placing and pretty labeling.
