The Application of modern information technology in petroleum drilling could improve drilling efficiency and reduce drilling cost.The development of drilling engineering more and more relied on the development and breakthrough of information technology.The demands of knowledge-based talents of drilling engineering integrated with information technology has been grown gradually.By analyzing the connotation of modern information technology and development history of drilling engineering and technology,the gradual expansion of information technology in drilling engineering and its roles were summarized.In order to promote the drilling information process and meet the demands of the talents in drilling industry,the concept of drilling information engineering is put forward.It uses the technology of drilling engineering as the foundation and uses modern information technology as the core,it is a branch of drilling engineering,which includes all the technologies and methods of information collection,transmission,storage,processing,application and information data mining.The framework,basic issues and the main research contents of drilling information engineering are discussed,the research progress in recent years of drilling information engineering concerning the theory and product development is introduced in brief,the future development of drilling information engineering is forecasted.
