XML-based Network Management:a Survey

Network management is a very important research topic for the Internet. The currently widely used SNMP-based technology has some drawbacks,especially on supporting configuration management. Recently there is some research on how to utilize XML technology on network management as an alternative or complementary approach to SNMP. XML-Based Network Management is more powerful on data modeling capability. It can provide efficient and secure transmission. It can also support more powerful configuration management operations. In this paper,we first analyze the requirements of Internet management and drawbacks of SNMP. Then the motivation and basic idea of XML-Based Network Management is presented. And current research directions in this area are summarized and introduced. At last the authors suggest several possible directions in future research.
