To improve energy efficiency of sensor nodes with limited energy and computing resources and then prolong the network lifetime,a novel clustering method DEEC(Distributed Energy-Efficient Clustering) for wireless sensor networks is proposed. Our approach computes an energy-optimal cluster structure for intra-cluster data gathering through local radio communication, further more, introduces a method to balance the energy load among the networks which better suits the periodical data gathering applications.Simulation results show that DEEC,under limited network latency, outperforms LEACH significantly with prolonging the network lifetime over 45%.
