Impact of TCP on throughput performance of WLAN under bursting transmission

Zhang Wei, Zhenghan Lin · Journal of Zhejiang University(Engineering Science) · 2004

The throughput improvement of wireless local area network (WLAN) under bursting transmission mode and the influence of TCP were studied. With and without considering TCP, the throughput trends of medium access control(MAC) layer and application layer were obtained by simulation. It was discussed why and how the advantages of bursting transmission were limited by TCP. Simulation results show that the key for the bursting transmission mode to improve WLAN throughput is the number of the frame exchanges in a transmission. For a network applying TCP, frame exchange number should be determined according to network loads so as to ensure good throughput and delay (jitter) performance.
