Effects of Centering Parameter Setting of Cf-ranking on Chinese Anaphora Resolution

Yulong Xu · 2009

This paper adopts the parametric approach to the Centering Theory and examines the effects of the setting of the Centering parameter of Cf-ranking on the results of Chinese pronoun and zero pronoun resolution. For this purpose, six anaphora resolution algorithms were designed by using different indicators of Cf salience and were run on the same set of annotated data. The results show that,overall,1) grammatical roles are more precise and reliable salience indicators than linear order;2) bringing syntactic parallelism into consideration can produce a positive effect, whereas integrating Cb continuity into ranking may have a negative effect, and 3) taking main/subordinate distinction into consideration can result in significant improvement on both ZP and PRON resolution.
