With semantic orientation analysis describing semantic and pragmatic functions of adverbs, generally these cases will be taken into account when other constituents except adverb itself being semantic focus of the sentence. Yet the differences in the semantic and pragmatic functions of adverbs are neglected between the situation of adverbs being stressed and being semantic focus and that of adverbs not being stressed and other constituents being the semantic focus. After an investigation of semantic and pragmatic functions of CAI with focus-associating theory, this paper shows that when an adverb is semantic focus its semantic and pragmatic functions are different from that when other constituents are semantic focuses.
