Optimization Algorithm of Fast Mode Decision for H.264 Inter-prediction

An optimization algorithm of fast mode decision for H.264 inter-prediction is presented in this paper by using the redundancy and disproportion between the modes.First, whether the SKIP mode is the best or not is prior decided by setting up a threshold.Then, early decision on modes 16×16 and 8×8 is given.Finally, the performance of the new algorithm is verified on the JM9.5 platform.Experimental results show that the new algorithm may save the entire time by 77.23% while bringing about only negligible loss in PSNR value and small increment of bit rate.
