Investigatioin and Improvement of Inter-prediction Mode Decision for H.264

The excellent performance of H.264 is achieved at the great expense of computational complexity.An effective method to improve encoding rate is to use fast inter-prediction mode decision.In the paper we first analyze the complexity of inter-prediction mode decision in H.264.Then we propose a modified inter-prediction mode decision method based on the X264 reference software.The experimental results show that this method can improve the encoding rate by about 55%.
