As a new engineering technology of crossover and integration between of water resources science and systems science, water resources systems engineering is of great importance in sustainable development strategy research of regional population, resources, environment, economy and society. The important problem is how to find effectively uncertainty information of practical complex systems of water resources. For this reason, after a brief introduction of the basic concepts and the primary methods of information theory, the applications of the information theory methods in the water resources systems engineering were divided according to the theory frame of water resources systems engineering. The paper analyzed the applications in the recent years in the process of modeling, optimization, simulation, prediction, evaluation and decision-making of water resource system separately.A discussion was carried on aiming at the problems and settlement methods existing in the applications of information theory methods in water resources systems engineering. The application prospect was presented and the necessity of developing hydro-informatics disciplines were pointed out.The above information theory methods possess of reference and application value in many applied systems engineering sciences such as resources systems engineering, environment systems engineering, and management systems engineering, etc.
