New indication of existing drugs and its significance in drug discovery

Based on known pharmacokinetics and safety profiles, repositioning the existing drugs for new indications can save costs and time in drug development. It is deemed to be one of the quickest and most effective strategies in the field of drug discovery. This review takes three representative drugs such as thalidomide, erythromycin, and nifedipine to summarize the significance of new indication for old drugs.
