Research on physical topology discovery algorithm for IP subnets

In this paper,the topology of a IP subnet is abstracted to a tree and the MAC addresses in the AFTs(address forwarding table) of interconnection switches are analyzed.A set of theorems to determine the switchs’relationships is also presented.Based on the above theorems,a new top-down algorithm for physical topology discovery is proposed,which can construct the whole topology utilizing the AFTs.Compared with other approaches to Ethernet topology discovery,this algorithm is more efficient and practical.
