Research on an Unified Data Model to Integrate the Traditional and Electrical Navigational Charts

Aiming at the requirement not only to provide with traditional paper chart products to assure the traditional navigation,but also to produce ENC to meet the electronic navigation,the unified data model is designed to be a superset of the S-57 and traditional chart models that can support either or both types of data.Based on the model,the mechanisms of conversing between two kinds of formats are discussed.Finally,a prototype is developed which can realize the display using nautical chart symbols and S-52 chart symbols.This research offers a thought and reference to the integration of traditional charts and ENCs.
