Application of Catastrophic Theory in Fault Detection

Lin Cheng-yan, Yu Yan · Journal of Oil and Gas Technology · 2008

On the base of catastrophic theory, a cusp catastrophic model was described. And the seismic signal was transformed into the normal form of cusp catastrophic. The parameters of catastrophe, such as time-domain catastrophic time, time-domain catastrophic potential, frequency-domain catastrophic time and frequency-domain catastrophic potential, are calculated in time and frequency domains. For the application of real seismic data interpretation, it is found that the position of abnormality of the catastrophic parameter curve or profile is related to the location of fault.Catastrophic theory can provide a new method for fault detection.
