Medical Image Segmentation Based on Improved Snake Model

Chun Gao · Journal of Henan University of Science & Technology · 2010

Active contour model is widely used in medical image segmentation. The snake algorithms known before can not deal with the concave regions and the initial contour must be set near the edge of the image. This paper presents a method for medical image segmentation by improving the external energy. In the calculation of the external energy,it uses gradient vector flow instead of gradient, which not only expands the effective range of the energy field, but also enhances the ability to deal with the concave edge.Experiments show that the improved model is an effective approach for segmenting MRI images.
