Jian Yang · Journal on Mathematics Education · 2014

Mathematics education is closely related to mathematical problem solving. Exercises, very important component of the textbooks, play an important role. Therefore, mathematic textbooks published by the People's Education Press in China, and the textbooks of Impact Mathematics published by McGraw-Hill/Glencoe in America are chosen as the research objects. In this study, we collect the data about exercises' number, type, background, the level of requirement and the openness of the conclusion respectively, and analyze the data by using SAS software along with the cases of exercises. This study finds that there were significant differences in statistical significance among these indexes. According to these differences, we offer some suggestions for the research and writing of mathematics textbook in junior high school of our country, including that enriching the background of exercises and physical pictures, increasing exercises' level of requirement appropriately, adding the number of open questions and designing more exercises up to the cognitive rule of the students.
