A Motion Estimation Algorithm Based on Adaptive Template

IUnsymmetrical-Cross Multi-Hexagon-Grid Search(UMHexagonS) is the motion estimation algorithm used in H.264 reference model JM10.2.In this paper,based on carefully analyzing of UMHexagonS,three important methods: non-symmetrical cross search,5×5 templates search and non-uniform multi-level hexagonal grid search mode,is optimized to improve the speed of this algorithm.In theory,the new adaptive template motion estimation algorithm can significantly reduce the number of search points which required by motion estimation,thus can greatly speed up motion estimation algorithm without reducing the accuracy.Experimental results shows,compared to original algorithm,the adaptive template algorithm can saving average 30% video coding time without compromising image quality or changing the bitrates.
