From Case Grammar Through Frame Semantics to Construction Grammar

Case grammar, frame semantics and construction grammar are successive theories raised by Charles Fillmore.Case grammar arose because traditional grammar and generative grammar could not handle the relationship between lexical meaning and syntax. But with case grammar, the definition of cases should not be based solely on lexical relations and mapping from cases to surface syntax is not reliable. While case grammar hinges on cases which are syntax-driven,frame elements within frame semantics are experience-driven.Thus the latter outperforms the former in five aspects.FrameNet is an outgrowth of the development of frame semantics. The advance of the project has begotten construction grammar, which is superior to case grammar and frame semantics in at least five ways.To be sure, construction grammar is not without problems.
