Survey on Beaconless Geographic Routing for Wireless Sensor Networks
Huang Cha · Journal of Chinese Computer Systems · 2014
Conventional geographic routing protocols of WSNs mainly depend on beacon broadcasting for routing decisions. This scheme inevitably brings more energy consumption, higher communication cost and less adaption for denser deployment, especially in dynamic networks. Beaconless forwarding is completely stateless and reactive because each node can on-line select an available forwarder without any prior knowledge of its neighbors. Beaconless forwarding routing can overcome the drawbacks arising from beaconbased geographic routing in dynamic networks with less energy consumption and lower communication cost. A comprehensive survey on beaconless geographic routing protocols is presented. It first analyzes the key techniques of beaconless forwarding, and then deeply discusses the typical beaconless geographic routing protocols. Furthermore,we compare these protocols based on protocol characters. Finally, some open issues are presented in hopes of further study on beaconless geographic routing protocols.
