Kakarimusubi"in Classical Japanese

The co-occurrence of auxiliary words and their accompanying sentence-final forms, what is calledkakarimusubi, is an important phenomenon in classical Japanese. It is closely related to the linguistic structures of Japanese language and cognitive psychology. This paper discusses its origin, development and properties from the synchronic perspective and also investigates the functions of auxiliary words in declaratives and the forms of the accompanying verbs.
