On the Criteria of Defining the Lexicons in Adjective-Verb Concurrence

Zhang Quan-sheng · Language and Translation · 2002

In classifying parts of speech, the phenomenon of concurrence is one of the tough points. Based on the functions of grammar, adhering rigorously to the principles of lexical identity, this paper makes a further step in verifying two criteria for identifying adjective-verb concurrent lexicons. This paper also analyzes the semantic basis on which an adjective transforms into a verb. That is, in the process of its application, when the static stored meaning of an adjective connotes the controlled meaning, the adjective is likely to possess the grammatical functions of a verb. Thus the lexicons may appear in the two grammatical forms and ultimately become the adjective-verb concurrent lexicons.
