Open shortest path first (OSPF) is a popular interior gateway protocol, and an optimized OSPF link weight setting can improve the network throughput and performance. An objective function for OSPF link weights optimization is proposed on the basis of generally analyzing of link utilization, link traffic and residual bandwidth, and an adaptive genetic algorithm is designed to solve the optimization problem. Experimental results demonstrate that under satisfying specified flow request, the proposed objective function can decrease the total network flow, and when network flow is large, it can balance network load distribution to improve the total network throughput.
