An Adaptive Defending Mechanism Against Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) Attacks

Yang Xing-liang · Jisuanji fangzhen · 2006

This paper proposes a router collaborating based adaptive detection and defending mechanism against DDoS.Through link congestion detection and packet dropping rate analysis, this mechanism can disclose the attack timely and construct the attack signatures accordingly. Then it is able to apply rate-limiting to the packets matching such signatures, and at the same time forward the attack signatures and rate-limiting request hop-by-hop to retrace the attack source using pushback protocol.During this process,rate-limiting is also employed on the intermediate routers, thus this algorithm not only manages to alleviate the link congestion and quench DDoS attack in a short period, but also protects normal network traffic to the utmost degree. And the simulation result on NS2 shows that the algorithm satisfactorily meets our expectation in attack-quenching and normal traffic protection.
