Based on the research of motion vector, a novel adaptive directional diamond search(ADDS) algorithm is proposed. This algorithm exploits temporal and spatial motion correlation to predict the initial search points, and applies early termination to the matching macroblock according to the threshold, and selects the small diamond pattern and direction diamond pattern according to the motion direction adaptively, which strengthens the search directivity. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the average search points with small change in image quality and improves the speed of search.
