Research on Data Compression Techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks

Technological advances in the development of sensing,embedded computing and low- power wireless communication technologies have enabled the development of wireless sensor networks. Because sensor nodes have limited battery lifetime,and radio transmission is the primary consumer of energy,excessive transmission quickly depletes batteries,rendering the nodes useless. Therefore,how to compress data while not compromising the mission of applications is a fundamental research problem. This paper surveys the research work on data compression,including time correlation based data compression,space correlation based data compression and time- space correlation based data compression. The existing problems in the current research and some future research directions are also discussed.
