Aimed at efficiently utilizing the multiple transmission rates provided by physical layer of IEEE 802.11protocol, a novel cross layer routing scheme was proposed by means of combining delay oriented with load balance after the impact of MAC and network layers being considered. In this routing scheme, the normal AODV protocol was modified, end-to-end link delay estimate value was regard as routing metric, and traffic load balance was implemented in mobile Ad Hoc networks by monitoring MAC layer queue for the node current congestion status to avoid interference. Meanwhile, the HELLO message mechanism in AODV was improved with a cross layer way, which decreases protocol’s spending. The simulation results show that the routing scheme improves the performance of Ad hoc network significantly.
