Channel busyness aware routing protocol for multi-rate ad hoc networks

LU Ding-zhi · Journal of Hefei University of Technology · 2011

IEEE 802.11 can support multiple data transmission rates to adapt to the timely-varying channel and achieve better channel utilization ratio. However, the traditional routing protocols in wireless ad hoc networks are unable to make full use of multi-rate and constrain the network throughput seriously.Based on the analysis of the wireless medium access competition and conflict backoffs, this paper proposes a channel busyness aware routing protocol(CBAR protocol) by the method of cross-layer design. In the design, the channel busyness ratio weighs the busyness of network channel, and the expected transmission time weighs the link bandwidth dynamically.Meanwhile, the MAC layer detects the link connectivity to decrease the overhead of the HELLO packet. The simulation results indicate that the routing protocol can balance the offered load, reduce the cost of conflict effectively and improve the overall network performance.
