Collision Adaptive S-MAC Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks

Guo We · Journal of Nantong University · 2014

In wireless sensor networks, fixed contention window of S-MAC protocol leads to the poor adaptability of network. In the paper, Markov chain model is adopted to analyze the key parameter of the network by using exponential backoff mechanism, and a collision adaptive S-MAC protocol is proposed. New protocol uses the exponential backoff mechanism, and two parameters are introduced to estimate channel collision probability, which make nodes modify contention window value adaptively to improve network performance. The NS2 simulation results showed that the new MAC protocol can adapt to the network traffic changes, and compared with S-MAC protocol, it improves energy efficiency and throughput significantly.
