STAR VOLUME AND ITS USE IN THE ESTIMATION OF THE LOCAL ALVEOLAR SPACE SIZE

Star volume is a contemporary stereological parameter reflecting the (mean) local size of an arbitrary structure (especially an irregular structure), and can be unbiasedly estimated by measuring the point-sampled intercepts. Star volume has been utilized in the quantitative study of the size of trabeculae, marrow cavity and placental intervillous space. Current studies showed that it is also useful in the evaluation of the (local) size of alveolar space.
