Research on state of art and prospect of earth fissures

Researchers have studied the occurrence and the development of earth fissure since the discovery of modern earth fissure in 1927 in USA.American experts firstly studied the earthquake,proposing that the formation of earth fissure is influenced by geological structure,later on,the study on the impact of over\|exploitating groundwater on earth fissure has been strengthened,developing an opinion of compound causes of structure and groundwater exploitation.Chinese researchers systematically studied the cause of earth fissure in Fenwei rift valley,put forward mechanical models and established simple forecast system based on geographical information system.This paper introduced not only the study in this field from domestic and abroad,but also the prospect of future research.Currently,the research of earth fissure is turning from static qualitative description to accurate quantitative kinetic research.The main aspects of earth fissure research in the future are to establish accurate forecast model(such as artificial neural network model) by using similar material to simulate the occurrence and development of earth fissures and conducting quantitative mathematical description of earth fissure by non\|linear theory,and to build a profound forecast system in combination with GIS to mitigate the environmental damage caused by earth fissure.
