Zhao Famin · Journal of Clinical Cardiology · 2015
Statins are first-line agents in lipid-lowering treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases.Recent studies have shown that statins may increase the risk of new-onset diabetes, which may be related with age, sex, and drug properties. The concrete mechanisms include reducing insulin secretion, decreasing insulin sensitivity, inducing apoptosis of islet beta cells, and so on.This review focuses on the development of new-onset diabetes caused by statins.
