Cellular Automata (CA) are the ideal models for complex systems, and are very suitable for simulating complex dynamic problems which are hardly described by mathematical formulae, such as evolution of microstructures in materials, etc. The fundamental ideas and theory of the CA were summarized in this paper. The structure and characteristics of the CA were introduced and the applications of Cellular Automata in mesoscopic simulation were reviewed. Some researches show that Cellular Automata possess some especial advantages in simulating mesoscopic behavior such as solidification, recrystallization, phase transformation, etc.
