Cognitive radio is a combining creature of wireless communication and artificial intelligence. The essential difference of cognitive radio from traditional radio lies in its intelligence. The key of realization of cognitive radio is the successful application of artificial intelligence to radio. This paper first introduces the cognitive cycle which incorporates intelligence, and then simply describes the cognitive engine which is the core module to realize intelligence.Afterwards,it reviews several artificial intelligence techniques from the view of reasoning, learning and optimization. Finally,it introduces the application of artificial intelligence techniques to cognitive engines existing.
