Formalism for Functionalism:FGD by P. Sgall and TFA

In this paper,we introduce and discuss the formal framework of the Functional Generative Description(FGD) developed by Czech linguist Petr Sgall and his group.FGD systemically incorporates into its framework such typical functionalist phenomena as free word order and TFA,avoiding problems in this respect faced by Chomsky’s TG grammar.FGD has now been used in Czech National Corpus(CNC),and has been put into joint work with formal semantics in America represented by Barbara Partee.At present in China,there has been no deep discussion of this framework.
