On the Applicative Approach to the Double Object Construction

This paper analyzes the applicative approach to the double object construction (DOC),which excels the previous transformational approach in many ways and is therefore quite popular in recent years. This approach,which takes the basic meaning expressed by DOC to be cause to ,can only be used to analyze part of giving DOCs,and is not applicable to getting DOCs found in Chinese and many other languages. This paper concludes that this approach cannot give a unified account to DOC and that some better solutions have to be found for this construction.
