Determine superscript and subscript relations in mathematical expressions based on fuzzy theory

The superscript and subscript relations between symbols appear frequently,and often confuse themselves with other relations. Based on fuzzy theory,a novel approach to distinguish those spatial relationships in mathematical expressions is proposed.Firstly,the regions relative to a symbol are predefined in mathematical expressions.Then,a fuzzy method is applied to determine the superscript and subscript relations.The experimental results strongly suggested that the recognition rate of the symbol distinction in the spatial rela- tionship dramatically is improved,especially to the symbols in handwritten mathematical expressions with the precision rate of 96.4%.
